How to Test Drive the Expat Life: Jen's Strategic Approach

For those intrigued by the possibility of living abroad, Maki recommends a methodical "try before you buy" approach. When Murphy asked if she helps clients explore potential expat locations through customized itineraries, Maki confirmed this is exactly how she handles these inquiries.

"That's how I did it with Puerto Rico," she explained, sharing her personal experience. "I just flew to Puerto Rico and, you know, rented a car and drove around the different places, rented an Airbnb in the neighborhood that I thought I would be interested in. And lo and behold, I did actually move to that same neighborhood."

Catering to Different Expat Demographics

Maki noted that her expat-curious clients tend to be older individuals considering becoming "snowbirds" – those who spend winters in warmer locations. Many are looking beyond traditional destinations like Florida, which has become increasingly crowded and expensive.

"They say maybe you could help us find a place in Mexico. Let's try that first. That seems like an easy option," Maki shared about typical client requests. Her approach is strategic: "We'll book something in Mexico, not necessarily Cancun proper, but, you know, maybe they'll do like a month, maybe they'll do a month, but split it up between, you know, three or four different destinations within Mexico."

The Value of a Trial Run

These extended stays serve as invaluable trial periods, allowing potential expats to evaluate if the lifestyle truly fits their needs and expectations. Sometimes the outcomes are negative: "They come back and say that was fun. But actually, no, I don't think, you know, I could live like that or, you know, I missed some of the creature features of back home."

But Maki emphasizes that these experiences – even when they don't lead to relocation – are valuable: "That's the only way that you know, and that's a good thing, as you can always go back home."

This low-risk approach to exploring expat opportunities allows individuals to make informed decisions based on firsthand experience rather than idealized notions of living abroad.
